Memory boxes will revive the past

OLDER people in Warrington are to be encouraged to talk about their past experience through the development of “memory boxes.”
Warrington Museum and the borough council’s Adult Social Care team and partners have joined forces for the initiative.
The new memory boxes can be loaned from the museum by organisations that work with older people and will contain a wealth of old objects, photographs, sounds, smells and prompt cards.
The aim is to bring pleasure to older people, particularly those with dementia and in care homes, and help improve their communication with others.
All the memory boxes have themes such a: A night on the town; Holidays; Life on the home front; Childhood; and The 1950s and 60s.
Cllr Pat Wright, the borough council’s executive member for health and wellbeing and adult services, said: “Living with dementia, or being a carer of someone who has dementia, can sometimes feel lonely and difficult. This is a wonderful and innovative project which I hope will bring enjoyment to everyone who uses a memory box.
“The team need more objects and photographs to make more boxes, so if you think you can help by donating something please get in touch with them.”
Anyone who can donate objects or photographs to the project, especially for the 1950s or 1960s, should contact Amanda Moore on [email protected] or call 01925 442395.

  1. Been here and done this and it is a fantastic experiance to see the pleasure this sort of thing gives to people suffering with dementia. If anyone has anything old and unwanted that may just jog a few memories then please make the effort to donate them.

  2. What a lovely idea and I’m sure they will bring back many a happy memory and a lot of enjoyment to those who borrow them. I’ll ask around and see if anyone has anything to dontate.

  3. This is a very good idea. Not least because a lot of common objects are fast becoming museum pieces and if we don’t make an effort to preserve these now we will not be able to access these when we are old and possibly in need of “happy memories”. If anyone is throwing away objects from a house clearance for example, please think about donating it to this memory resource and phone the number given to see if it would be of interest.

  4. went to open day a couple of weeks back at the museum.

Great day with good turnout when I was there in the morning. Lady running it was very lovely. freindly, knowledgeable and helpful.

Boxes were great idea and I had a good time talking about the old days and how this sort of thing helps people remember who they are and where they came from.

Also how it is fun and makes you feel good too!

Lets see more people doing things like this.
