POLICE today publicly thanked communities across Cheshire for the support they have given officers during the period of heightened security arising from the riots in other parts of the country.
There has still be no significant incidents of public disorder in Warrington or across the county – but a total of 10 people have now been arrested.
Eight were arrested on suspicion of inciting public disorder through social networking websites and two more in connection with anti-social behaviour.
Five of the arrests have involved young men from Warrington, although two were released without charge. A 13-year-old has been released on bail pending further enquiries.
Police say they have maintained a high visibility presence within communities, and any offences have been robustly dealt with.
A police spokeswoman said: “A number of young people have been spoken to with their parents, and advice given regarding entries on social networking sites.
“Police will continue to monitor online activity and call to account anyone who appears to be promoting criminality.
“During the last 24 hours police have seen an increase in the number of calls from members of the public. The majority of calls relate to postings on social networking sites which cause local people concern. All calls are being followed up and some have led directly to arrests.”
Cheshire Police have sent a number of officers to London and Manchester to assist their forces.
Many officers have had rest days cancelled and are working extra hours to ensure Cheshire continues to enjoy a high level of service.
Advice is being offered to retailers and other businesses by police, fire, and council staff. Local employers have release members of the Special Constabulary from their daily jobs so they can volunteer their services alongside regular police.
The spokeswoman added: “Finally, Cheshire Police would like to thank the communities of Cheshire for the information they have provided which has assisted the Constabulary in taking action, and for their support of officers as they go about their duties.”
