MORE than 2,400 women and girls from the Warrington area took part in a “Race for Life” at Arley Hall and raised almost £80,000 for charity.
Thousands of females -ranging from toddlers to grandmothers- braved the wet weather to join Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life.
Many sported fairy wings, feather boas and fancy dress in every shade of pink imaginable.
Debbie McConnell, Race for Life event manager for Arley Hall, said: “The event saw over 2,400 participants run, jog and walk around the course and so far we have raised just under £80,000 in sponsorship.
“We still have lots more sponsorship money coming in every day with every penny raised going towards our lifesaving work.”
The race is the UK’s largest women-only fundraising event. Women of all ages and fitness levels come together to walk, jog or run 5k or 10k to help beat cancer.
Figures show that the number of people surviving cancer is increasing. In the 1960s, fewer than three out of 10 children diagnosed with cancer were successfully treated. Now, it’s more than seven out of 10. More than 95 per cent of men diagnosed with testicular cancer are currently cured and more women are surviving breast cancer than ever before.
Debbie added: “Despite improvements in treatment, we still have a long way to go. One in four people in the UK will die from cancer. With the help of people at Warrington’s, Arley Hall we want to change that.”
