Graduates buck the trend on jobs

GRADUATES from the Warrington campus of the University of Chester are beating the national trend by finding jobs.
Employment success continues for the university as the number of those finding jobs within six months of graduating continue to increase – despite the recession.
The university’s graduate employment success places the institution towards the top of the Higher Education Statistics Agency’s graduate employment returns table.
Statistics show that 93 per cent of the institution’s degree students secured employment or further study after graduating last year – an increase from 91.2 per cent the previous year. This marks a return to its pre-credit crunch level in 2006.
The statistics place the institution, which has campuses in Chester and Warrington, as second in the North West and 25th in England for graduate employment success rates.
Paul Gaunt, director of the Careers and Employability Department, said success is due to delivering high-quality courses, supported by work-based learning, volunteering and employment opportunities, and to the professional services his team provides.
He said: “The university has tackled the recession head-on by providing customised career planning and job search sessions to equip our students and graduates with the positive knowledge that good opportunities are still available, and the ability to develop strategies to access those opportunities..
“Our recent shortlisting for the national Times Higher Education’s Leadership and Management Awards recognised our success in helping graduates into work, delivering cutting edge training for employability, and using the latest technology to ensure our students and graduates have the information and support they need to thrive in the highly competitive graduate job market.”
A series of new initiatives includes UniJob, an on-campus student employment initiative which advertises paid positions within the university exclusively to its students.
Other initiatives include employability and recession-buster workshops, on-line jobs vacancy advertising and customised careers advice.
