Council urged to act over charity closure

COUNCIL chiefs are to be asked to conduct a review of the likely impact of the impending closure of the century-old charity Warrington Council for Voluntary Services.
Two Liberal Democrat councillors are to put a motion to tonight’s meeting of the borough council expressing regret that the CVS is to close.
Liberal Democrat leader Ian Marks (pictured) and Cllr Keith Gleave will ask the council to recognise the valuable role played by the voluntary sector in Warrington and express concern about the possible detrimental effect on the public of the closure.
They will also ask for the matter to be referred to the council’s executive board to conduct a review on the impact of the proposed closure to ensure that residents are not adversely affected by any loss of the services likely to be provided in the future.
The CVC was set up 101 years ago and is an independent organisation which offers services to other local voluntary and community groups to enable them to carry out their work and achieve their aims.
But following the loss of funding the charity has been forced to make the difficult decision to close
CVS chiefs say the closure is forced because of a combination of factors, the main one being loss of income due to contracts coming to an end and no replacement income being available.

  1. It’s been known for quite some time that the CVS have been in difficulties and under threat of closure so why didn’t Marks and Co DO SOMETHING about it when they were in power!! He’ll be pleading on behalf of Connexions and the Youth Cafe next! How hypocritical!

  2. This is not new! Marks & Co are responsible for this. How many more closures are in nthe pipe line? The way the “essential” local charities are finded needs urgent overhaul. I wonder will the “new” administration at the Town Hall do any better? They couldn’t do worse!
