Carnival in the woods

FAMILIES from Warrington are invited to a “carnival in the woods” tomorrow (Sunday) to celebrate the 20th birthday of The Mersey Forest – the growing network of woodlands and green spaces being created across Merseyside and Cheshire.
The birthday bash, featuring den building, puppet shows, woodland story-telling walks and more, is free to attend and takes place from 11am until 4pm in the beautiful setting of Risley Moss Local Nature Reserve in Birchwood.
The event celebrates two decades of hard work to plant more than eight million trees across The Mersey Forest area, with people from all walks of life having played their part in the success.
Working with partners including Warrington Borough Council and neighbouring local authorities, local school children have planted tens of thousands of trees to brighten up their school grounds, community volunteers have come together in “Friends of the woodland” groups to care for their local woods, and out-of-work youngsters have learned new skills and gained employment by working to improve local green sites.
Paul Nolan, Director of The Mersey Forest said: “The impact of everyone’s tremendous efforts over the past twenty years is clear: two thirds of people say their local environment has improved thanks to the creation of The Mersey Forest, and more than 90 per cent support having a Community Forest in their area.
“Looking back to 1991, Merseyside and Cheshire had much less woodland than other parts of the country, but by working in partnership to create The Mersey Forest we are making great inroads to reduce that gap for the benefit of people, wildlife and the local economy.”
Residents can show their backing for The Mersey Forest’s ongoing mission to create more local woodlands by signing up as a supporter for free at www.merseyforest.org.uk/supporters or by attending the “carnival in the woods”.
The event is part of the Green Safari fun day run by Warrington Borough Council and Risley Moss Action Group, so as well as The Mersey Forest carnival, which will include dancers, bush skills sessions, and a band playing instruments made from junk, there will also be many other fun activities and stalls to explore.
