Police warn of sneak in burglaries

PEOPLE in Warrington are being advised to keep their doors and windows secure during the warmer weather to prevent “sneak-in” burglaries.
Detectives say that during the warmer weather and lighter nights, there tends to be an increase in this type of crime. They are reminding people to be security-aware to ensure they do not fall foul of opportunistic thieves.
Police advise ensuring windows are secured and that outside doors are locked, even when people are in the house. Valuables should be kept out of sight and people should not leave large amounts of cash in the home.
Officers advise using a chain when answering the door to restrict access. They also advise keeping cars locked and not to leave valuables on display.
Residents are also being asked to keep an eye on their neighbourhood and to report any suspicious activity to police.
Detective Inspector Matt Durcan said: “Naturally as the warmer weather sets in and people are in and out of the house more often there is the temptation to leave windows and doors unlocked and open.
“But people need to be aware that this is also an open invitation to an opportunist burglar. It only takes a matter of seconds for a thief to get into your house and grab something that is valuable to you – such as a handbag, keys or cash.”
He said police were committed to tackling this type of crime but needed the continued support of the local community.
“We would urge residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity in their area immediately. We would also urge them to address their own home security measures to make life even more difficult for thieves,” he added.
