World Cup could still come to town

A RUGBY League World Cup tournament may still go ahead in Warrington despite possible funding problems, according to a local MP.
MP for Warrington South David Mowat said that Sports Minister Hugh Robertson had suggested that the government could be prepared to step in to provide funding for the tournament, if the North West Development Agency (NWDA) – due to be abolished in March – does not.
In response to a question in the Commons from Mr Mowat, Mr Robertson said although the Government’s preference was for the NWDA to provide the £1m it originally promised, he had recently discussed other funding options with the Rugby Football League. The NWDA is not due to announce its decision until later this month.
Mr Mowat said: “An independent survey has said that the Rugby League World Cup will bring £24m to the North West. For £1m, that seems like a pretty decent investment to me.
“Warrington has submitted an excellent bid to host the tournament, which I fully support and I have continued to pursue this issue in Parliament as I know what a difference it will make to the town.”
