Life at the top gets tougher

GRAPPENHALL suffered their first defeat in the top tier of Cheshire cricket when they went down by three wickets at Hyde.
Batting first, Grappenhall could only muster a modest 189-8, Iain Wright top scoring with 52 and useful innings coming from Richard Green, 37 and Luke McCoy, 31.
Guy Emmett bowled well to take 5-50 and Tom Evans took 2-39 as the home side replied, but it was not enough to stop Hyde reaching 192-7 to send Grappenhall slipping to their first defeat in the Cheshire County League premier division.
Grappenhall 2nd also went down at the hands of the Hyde second string at Broad Lane.
Grappenhall were dismissed for 200, Mike Holden, 35 and Sam Guest, 32.
Hyde reached 205-6, despite some fine bowling by Guest, who took 4-57.
Warrington chalked up a useful six wicket win at Tattenhall, where they dismissed the home side for 108. Steve Haydon took 2-13, Robert Batey 3-19 and Andy Martel 3-49. Warrington coasted to 109-4, Malcolm Agar hitting 42 and Richard Heaney 24 not out.
Warrington 2nd romped home by 10 wickets against visitors Sale.
The Walton Lea club’s 3rd XI travelled to Birkenhead Park where the home side hit 217-8, Chai Gadepalli taking 3037, Wesley Charlton 2-53 and James Lewis 2-51.
Warrington replied with 218-6, Sam Houghton hitting 55, Tim Rothwell an unbeated 70 and Gadepalli 37 not out.
In the 4th XI game at Walton Lea, Warrington won by six wickets after dismissing Birkenhead Park for 129. Mansoor Naseem hit 33 and Aaron Chadderton 56 for Warrington.
In the Meller Braggins Cheshire League, Lymm Oughtrington Park hung on for a draw at Lindow, where the home side declared on 239-4. Lymm were 172-7 at the close.
Stretton went down by 53 runs at Bowdon Vale after the home side batted first and totalled 172. Stretton replied with 119.
Stretton 2nd defeated Oakmere by 65 runs. Stretton batted first and reached 147-7 and then dismissed the visitors for 82.
In the Cheshire Alliance, Glazebury romped to a fine victory at Ellesmere Port.
Glazebury batted first and hit 168, Wayne Hargreaves hitting 49, skipper Andrew Calvert 33 and Jack Warhurst 24. The home side were never in the hunt and were dismissed for 85, Dave Acton taking 4-34, Rhys Marsh 3-13 and Jon Gibbons 2-9.
Glazebury 2nd also won when they entertained Ellesmere Port 2nd.
The visitors batted first and were dismissed for 138, Gerard Southworth taking 2-16, Matthew Shailer 2-20 and Phil Knipe 2-3. Glazebury cantered to 139-3, Dean Lord hitting 57 and Chris Lord 52.
Rylands dismissed Frodsham for a meagre 81, with Ross Arrowsmith, 4-25 and Adam Peters, 5-46, doing the damage. Peter Knowles hammered 42 not out and Wesley Jenkins 20 not out as Rylands replied with 84-1.
Rylands 2nd draw with Appleton 3rd in a keenly contested derby game.
Appleton batted first and totalled 205, debutante Vish hitting 74 and Stuart McGregor 69. Sujith Nair took 5-26. Rylands replied well through Andy Lowe, 57, but Paul Grumley bowled well to take 3-31 and restrict the home side to 182-8.
Appleton 1st were held to a draw at Wirral but claimed the lions share of the bowling points..
Batting first, Appleton hit 187, Anthony Hurst hitting 49, Tom Lomas 36 and Chris Grumley 27. Wirral were 168-9 at the close, Grumley completing a useful all-round performance with 3-12, Danny Oliver taking 2-20 and James Darbyshire 2-30
Appleton 2nd went down by four wickets against visiting Rostherne.
Appleton made 168, Gareth Bailey taking 45 and David Lomas 35. Rostherne replied with 169-6, despite some fine bowling from Chris McClellan, 4-63 and Aamir Rashid, 2-28.
Appleton 4th were soundly beaten at home to Stalybridge 2nds. The visitors bludgeoned the ball for an impressive 250 and the home side could only muster 100 runs in reply.

Women’s cricket

Appleton began their defence of their inaugural Cheshire Women’s League title with a nine-wicket win over Oakmere, although they had wait until the penultimate over to seal the win.
Fourteen Cheshire representative players were on show in the match and two of these – Helen Smith (73) and Hayley Agnew (63) – starred in adding 121 for the second wicketfor Oakmere.. However, none of their colleagues reached double figures in a total of 171-7, with the key bowlers being Anni Rashid (3-22) and Nathalie Long (2-16).
Oakmere bagged the wicket of Emma Barlow in reply for 33, but Amy Page with 79 not out and Natalie Lyons, unbeaten on 40, completed the job.
