Cigarette end starts pub blaze

FIRE crews tackled a blaze at a Warrington pub early today – believed to have been started by a discarded cigarette end last night.
The blaze was at the Sportsman’s Arms, in Penketh and involved an area of decking at the rear of the pub.
Crews used an extinguisher to tackle the fire and cut away the affected decking.
The area is used by smokers and it is thought the fire had smouldered for several hours before bursting into flames shortly after 5am today.
There was no damage to the main pub building.

  1. surely combustible ‘buildings’ used for smoking areas should be inspected by the building’s insurers or the fire brigade. I would think combustible smoking areas should be at least 10M away from the main building.

  2. I don’t know about insurers and the Fire Brigade but why would any sane person assume that decking was a suitable flooring material for a smoking area? Smokers are renowned for stubbing out ciggies on the floor and clearly this one was not out properly.

  3. I would imagine that it was the same cause as the Bradford City and

Kings Cross fires ie, the build up of combustible material beneath.

  4. Useless, incomprenisble pastime – ban smoking ergo, no fire.

Repent all you sinners, you will never know how repugnent it is until you quit.

    Born again non-smoker !!!!

  5. Ban smoking ergo no NHS, police or fire brigade – coz there wouldn’t be the tax revenue to pay for it. Unless they start to tax smug, sanctimonious anti-smokers for all the hot air and drivel they pollute the atmosphere with!

  6. I’m always willing to listen – maybe I’m wrong. So go ahead, give me a list of good reasons to smoke. Hell, just give me ONE good reason. If tax revenue is it, why not go the whole hog and legalize and tax pot, heroin and cocaine.

  7. “give me ONE good reason” Because it’s a free country and people have the right not to have their choices and actions dictated by small minded people who they’re not harming in any way? If you’re going to ban smoking on the basis that people chose to harm themselves by doing it, why not go the whole hog and ban driving, sport and all adventurous activities?

  8. Liebour;....Don't worry, the grandkids will pay! on

because when you get in a car or go on a football pitch; you don’t set out knowing that it is bad for you, your kids and everyone else around you and in fact stands a good chance of killing you I guess inky!
