FORMER Warrington student Kirsty Ashton, who has raised more than £83,000 for charity, has won a prestigious award.
Kirsty, who studied at the Warrington campus of the University of Chester, suffers from a rare genetic and painful disorder called Neurofibromatosis, which causes tumours to develop in her nerve endings.
She has written her own book, Kirsty’s story; Living with Neurofibromatosis and Scoliosis, to raise money for charity and organised a fundraising campaign.
She beat off fierce competition to win TheSpirit Award at the National vInspired Awards at the IndigO2 arena in London.
Kirsty, 20, who was presented with her award by comedian Keith Lemon, was named Spirit Award winner in recognition of her work raising money for the charity When You Wish Upon a Star.
So far Kirsty has raised £83,000 for the cause which has paid for more than 100 children to visit Lapland. She also worked to help raise funds for other local charities whilst at university.
She said: “I am so honoured to have received this award. I’m proud to be recognised and I want to represent all the good work that other young volunteers do, especially by those that were in my category.”
Debra Donoghue, volunteer co-ordinator at the university, who nominated Kirsty for the award, said: “Kirsty is an extraordinary person and an inspiration to all. Her endless work for others is astonishing. She really deserved to win the award.”
Kirsty is continuing with her fundraising and further information can be found via her website www.kirstysstory.co.uk
