THE under-18 girls at the Warrington Wolves Handball Academy enjoyed a great end to the season, topping the league despite losing their last game by a single point.
But the disappointment was soon forgotten as they picked up the silverware however.
Wolves won their penultimate game with a convincing 9-4 win over Manchester Hawks. Leanne Kindley proved crucial to the game, picking up some vital goals.
The final game was against second placed Deva HC. This was always going to be a much tougher match, however, due to their domination throughout the season, the Wolves already had the league title under their belts. This match was mostly for bragging rights and to finish the season on a high.
Wolves were first out the blocks with Sophie Unsworth taking full advantage of some poor Deva defending and scoring three goals in quick succession. However, Deva tightened up and began to whittle the lead down and then pulled level.
The two teams were locked together for the majority of the game after that. Deva had the chance to take a convincing lead on several occasions but were denied by first class acrobatics from goal keeper Kara Hunte.
Beth Wilbraham scored some fantastic long range efforts which put the Wolves ahead again but Deva again drew level with some fast breaks.
When the final whistle blew, Deva were just one goal ahead after what was possibly the most dramatic game of the season.
Wolves lose – but get the silverware
