More want to be involved in decisions

A SURVEY carried out in Warrington indicates a significant increase in the number of people who would like to get involved in local decision making.
There has also been a big increase in the number of people who are volunteering, the survey by the Warrington Partnership has shown.
The Partnership – a collection of key public, private and third sector organisations from across the borough that works together to help improve and shape the town’s future – carried out the research to find out what people think about public services and what it is like to live in particular areas.
More than 1,000 people took part – mostly online but also including face-to-face enquiries to ensure a fair representation of all residents.
It was overseen by the borough council’s research team and administered at about a quarter of the cost of previous surveys.
Respondents were asked for their opinions about the quality of life in their local area, community safety and performance ratings of local public services, among other things.
All those taking part were entered into a draw to win prizes donated by partners including Warrington Wolves and the Golden Square shopping centre to thank them for getting involved.
The survey showed that:
*41 per cent of local people would like to be involved more in decision making, up from 28 per cent in 2008.
*Nine out of 10 people think it is a good idea for local people to work together and develop solutions to issues in their locality.
*41 per cent of respondents said they regularly volunteer compared to 24 per cent in 2008.
Cllr Keith Bland, (pictured) deputy leader of the council and chairman of the Warrington Partnership said: “By taking part in our Warrington Together survey, local residents are helping to make a positive difference to where they live. It is more important than ever that the council and our fellow service providers use our resources wisely to best meet the needs of our people so we are certain we are dealing with the things that matter to Warrington people.”
