WARRINGTON Borough Council and the Wolves are working together in a bid to host Rugby League World Cup games in 2013.
Towns across the country will be hoping to be chosen to host games, provide training camps and accommodate teams from around the world.
England and Wales are co-hosting the event, and Warrington is aiming to be one of the host towns. The competition will take place in the October and November.
Cllr Bob Timmis, the borough council’s executive member for Leisure and Skills, said: “Warrington has a rich Rugby League history with Warrington Wolves being at the heart of its community.
“Our warm, friendly welcome to visitors, along with our excellent sports, leisure, tourist and travel links puts us in a fantastic position to be successful in the bidding process.
“I would urge all residents, whether they are rugby fans or not, to get behind this bid and help put Warrington firmly on the map.”
Andy Gatcliffe, chief executive of Warrington Wolves, said: “By working together, the club, the borough council and many community partners, are extremely keen to host and present our borough wide facilities, be they public or commercial, in order to gain maximum exposure and economic benefit for all”.
The last time a Rugby League World Cup game was played in Warrington was 1995 when New Zealand played Tonga, and many fans still talk about the experience of that day.
