COUNCIL chiefs at Warrington are calling on the Chancellor to scrap the proposed increase in fuel tax to protect motorists and businesses in the town.
Cllr Ian Marks (Liberal Democrat) and his deputy, Cllr Keith Bland (Conservative) have written an open letter to Chancellor George Osborne urging him to scrap the increase planned for April.
The two leaders have welcomed the Chancellor’s hint that he is looking again at this tax increase – and urge him to override the increase in the interests of Warrington’s residents and businesses.
In the letter they say: “Residents and firms in Warrington are very concerned about the impact of the proposed 1p a litre rise in fuel duty due to take effect this April. We appreciate you inherited this from the previous Chancellor, Alistair Darling, who announced it in last year’s budget.”
They referred to his hint that he may override the increase, which Mr Osborne has said could not be decided until after the Budget on March 23.
Cllrs Marks and Bland said: “We understand the importance of reducing the massive deficit left by the previous government. However the price of fuel has increased significantly in recent weeks due to the movement in the price of oil and the increase in VAT.
“Removing this additional increase would be greatly welcomed by private motorists and by businesses in our town.”
A copy of their letter was also forwarded to Danny Alexander, Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

While I agree that the last government caused a lot of the problems which has lead to the mess we are all now in; Osbourne can easily scrap the duty rise because of the additional tax take due to the VAT rise in January. What Bland and Marks SHOULD be moaning to the government about are the planned tolls on the new Mersey crossing; as this will have a far more detrimental effect on the towns private and business car drivers when the toll avoiders come streaming through Warrington
Baz – We should have a chat re the toll – I’m with you on this one – I’ll call around to see you soon.
