JUST 24 hours after announcing his departure from Warrington Wolves first team coach Jimmy Lowes teamed up with Leeds Rhinos saying “it feels like coming home!”
Lowes, who was part of the recent Four Nations coaching staff Down Under, left the Wolves on good terms but has now joined the coaching staff at Leeds Rhinos under Head Coach Brian McDermott.
Lowes joined the coaching staff at Warrington in 2007 as assistant coach to Paul Cullen after a coaching at Salford. On Paul’s departure in the 2008 season he took on the role of head coach before passing responsibility on to former Leeds Head Coach Tony Smith who joined the club in 2009.
Commenting on Lowes’ departure Head of Coaching and Rugby Tony Smith said: “Jimmy has left the club on really good terms and I would like to thank him for his contributions throughout my time here. We wish him well for the future and he goes with the blessings of the club.”
Jimmy added: “I would like to thank all the coaches, players and staff at the club. The time has come for me to move on and I know that the club is in very good hands.”
James is also well-known for his playing career at hooker having played for Hunslet, Leeds and most successfully at Bradford being part of their winning team for many years. In 1997 he was named Man of Steel for the Super League II season.
Commenting on his new role at Leeds Lowes said: “I am very excited about the future at Leeds.
“I have some fond memories of my time here as a player and I know they are a club with a bright future.”
Lowes, who left Leeds in 1996 to join Bradford, began his coaching career under Brian Noble at Odsal in 2004 before moving to Salford the following season.
His departure from Wolves was announced on Friday, citing his desire to pursue other ventures.
That has proved to be the chance to return to Leeds, and Lowes admitted he felt he was returning home.
“In recent years, Leeds Rhinos have led the way and we have an important job now to keep developing the club and maintaining those high standards,” he said.
“I would like to thank Warrington Wolves for giving me the opportunity to coach at the highest level.
“I cannot wait to get started on Monday morning with the Leeds boys and beginning our plans for the 2011 season.
“I have been coming to Headingley for many years as an opponent but it really feels like I am coming home now that I am back at the club.”
