A RUGBY League fan seriously injured in an assault at Warrington’s Halliwell Jones Stadium at the weekend is still in a critical condition in hospital.
Police have renewed an appeal for witnesses of the attack which took place after the grand final of the Co-operative Conference National League One, between Halifax and Featherstone Rovers on Sunday (September 26).
David Singer, aged 32, from Halifax went to the match with his parents and some friends.
He was accompanied by a friend and was returning to their coach, parked off Dallam Lane, when they were attacked by at least two other men.
David suffered serious head injuries and was taken to Warrington Hospital, later being transferred to the specialist Walton Neurology Centre in Liverpool.
He remains in a critical conditions.
Police say there is a strong indication the offenders were Featherstone fans, and got onto one of the Featherstone coaches.
Detective Inspector Steve Jones, of the Cheshire Police major incident team said: “This was a vicious assault that has left a man in a very serious condition.
“Fortunately incidents like this are extremely rare at rugby matches, which are usually peaceful events for all the family to enjoy.
“I believe many people may have witnessed this attack, as the coach park would have been very busy at the time. I would therefore call on the fans who were leaving the match on Sunday to cast their minds back, and if they saw anything which could help us, then please come forward immediately.”
The attack took place at about 8.15pm.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Cheshire Police on 0845 458 0000, or alternatively the confidential Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
DI Jones added: “I appeal to all rugby fans – it does not matter which club you support – to consider if you can help us identify who is responsible for the attack which has left a fellow rugby fan lying unconscious in a hospital bed. I know there are people out there who will know who is responsible or will have strong suspicions. It is vital that you call us. This is not what rugby is about.”
