THE second annual VQ Day – celebrating vocational qualifications – was marked in Warrington with an “educational Oscars” award ceremony.
Hosted by Warrington Collegiate, the event celebrated the achievements of students on the new graduate scheme programme.
The programme was introduced as a pilot last year to recognise the outstanding extra curricular achievements of students aged 14-16, ranging from creating college events to other charitable, sporting or voluntary activity.
ICT student Beau Bray-Deacon, aged 17 won the Gold Award for his outstanding voluntary support for various college campaigns throughout the year, the completion of his Duke of Edinburgh Award and participation in the student council.
BTEC sport student Lara Davison won the sports personality of the year award for her commitment to sport activity within the community.
There was also a group award for contribution to charity work. This was given to carpentry and joinery students who walked 26 miles from the college to Claire House Children’s Hospice, raising £2,000 in sponsorship and delivering a new bench they had made for the hospice’s garden.
Collegiate principal Paul Hafren said: “We’re very proud of the extra curricular achievements of our excellent vocational students, particularly their commitment to charity.
“We have always endeavoured to encourage their participation in voluntary activity and the new graduate scheme programme has demonstrated how it can benefit their overall development.”
