Crackdown on doorstep crime

ROGUE traders have been targeted in Warrington as part of a crackdown on doorstep crime.
Police and partners joined forces to target rogue tradesmen – who profit unscrupulously from the elderly and vulnerable.
Officers patrolled the streets and roads checking that those plying their trade were genuine craftsmen.
Local neighbourhood officers worked alongside officials from Trading Standards and the borough council’s environment management department and HMCS.
Inspector Simon Blackwell, who helped to co-ordinate the operation said: “Operation Rogue Trader aims to raise awareness of the problems of rogue traders and cold callers. The main focus of the operation was those who target the homes of the elderly and vulnerable and con them into paying more for jobs around their home. These jobs include fixing roof tiles, gardening or laying a drive. Some are known to charge inflated prices for work, which is often sub-standard.
“This sort of behaviour is unacceptable and we hope that Operation Rogue Trader not only helps to raise awareness of the problems of rogue tradesman and cold callers but also provides valuable reassurance to the local community.
“We will not tolerate those who prey on the most vulnerable people and expect to get away with it. Residents can rest assured that we will take positive action wherever and whenever necessary.”
Checks were also carried out at various business premises across the town including building suppliers and scrap dealers.
Leaflets, stickers and information cards were also distributed in local banks to remind cashiers to be on the look out for potentially vulnerable people who could be withdrawing large amounts of cash to pay traders for work in their home.
The combined efforts of all agencies resulted in a total of 220 stop checks on vehicles throughout the day. During that time seven road traffic offences were identified.
Two courts warrants were also executed throughout the day in relation to non-payment of fines and this resulted in a total of £500 being paid.
Eight people were also arrested for a variety of offences. These included two arrests for outstanding court fines, two arrests for offences relating to fraud by misrepresentation – one man has since been charged with fraud and another man has been bailed pending further enquiries. Four people were also arrested on suspicion of trader/fraud offences. Enquiries are ongoing.
Anyone with any information about rogue traders or bogus callers is urged to call Cheshire Police on 0845 458 0000.
