Nine fight to be town's MPs

A TOTAL of nine candidates will be fighting for the two Warrington Parliamentary seats, it emerged when nominations closed.
In the key Warrington South seat – said to vital to the Conservatives if they are to have any hope of winning an overall majority in Parliament – the three main parties will be joined by the UK Independence Party – represented by former Tory James Ashington – and the Green Party.
In the safe Labour seat of Warrington North, the three main parties are joined by an Independent – former Labour councillor at Warrington Albert Scott.
The Warrington South seat has been held by Helen Southworth, Labour, for 12 years.
But she is standing down and her seat will be hotly contested by Labour, Conservative and the Liberal Democrats.
Once a safe Conservative seat, it would have to return to the Tories if they were to emerge triumphant in the election overall.
Long time Warrington North MP Helen Jones has a massive majority and it is highly unlikely she could be unseated.
Borough councillor Paul Campbell is fighting the seat for the Conservatives, however, and a former Labour borough councillor, Dave Eccles, is contesting the seat for the Liberal Democrats.
The election takes place on May 6 – same day as the borough council elections.
Full line up of candidates is as follows:
Warrington North: Paul Thomas Campbell, Conservative; Dave Eccles, Liberal Democrat; Helen Mary Jones, Labour; Albert Scott, Independent.
Warrington South: James Ashington, UK Independence Party; Nick Bent, Labour; Jo Crotty, Liberal Democrat; Stephanie Davies, Green Party; David John Mowat, Conservative.

  1. It amazes me to read that Helen Southworth has actually held the Warrington South seat for 12 years. I have NEVER EVER seen her round here or heard her backing or fighting for any local issues ! Maybe I’ve just been asleep 🙂
