Slow down or pay the price – police

POLICE have issued a strong warning to drivers who speed on a busy Warrington road – “Slow down or pay the price.”
The warning follows complaints from residents of the Orford area about the number of motorists breaking the 20mph limit along Long Lane
Police are urging drivers to be aware of the speed restrictions that are in place – or pay the price for flouting the law.
PCSO Janet Price of Warrington Central Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: “Clearly this is an area of concern for local residents. In response to those concerns we are appealing to drivers to take note of the speed limit that is in force along the road.
“Speed limits are in place for a reason and there is no excuse for exceeding the limit. There are plenty of warning signs in the area and people need to ensure they are taking notice of them.
“We will not tolerate drivers who choose to ignore the rules of the road. Officers will be carrying out a period of enforcement in the area using the hand-held speed camera. We hope that this will act as a deterrent to anyone thinking of breaking the speed limit in the future.
“We hope that the period of enforcement will not only encourage drivers to slow down but will also help to educate drivers about the potential consequences of their actions and make them more aware of how their driving impacts on members of the local community.
“We want to reassure local residents that we will take action against anyone who is found to be breaking the law – there is no excuse for ignoring the rules of the road.”

  1. “Speed limits are in place for a reason” …

That’s true when the road has a bad history of accidents but what we have here is purely a temporary experiment by WBC road planners to ascertain if a 20mph speed limit would work on a main A road.

I would suggest that the outcome of the experiment was known before it began as similar trials have been carried out many times across the country with predicable results.

The question we should really be asking is if it’s only a test, is it right to use police enforcement with fines and prosecutions when dealing with a planner’s experiment?”

People don’t obey artificially low speed limits and if you need any proof, just take a trip down to the general hospital and see if you can find anyone driving at 5mph. Even the bloody laundry trolleys go faster than that!
