FIRECREWS are calling for a derelict building in Warrington to be pulled down after a string of call outs over the last two months.
They fear a series of minor fires at the Howley Lane address could be putting lives at risk by diverting valuable fire-fighting resource away from where it is really needed.
A firefighter at Warrington Fire Station said: “We’ve been called out four or five times to this site over the last couple of months and every time there is a fire there the building becomes more and more unsafe.”
“Because the land around the building is derelict and surrounded by fencing, we can’t get close to tackle any blaze.
“This means even if there is a small rubbish fire we have to attach four hose reels together just to reach it. This is taking up a lot of resource now that could be needed elsewhere in Warrington.”
The blazes are thought to have been started by homeless people sleeping rough in the building who have started a fire to keep warm and by youngsters setting fire to rubbish for kicks.
The fire on Saturday night turned out to be a pile of rubbish against one of the building walls. Fire crews were able to put it out and no-one was injured.
The Fire Safety Department will now try to find out who owns the building and try to speed up its demolition or development.
Plea to demolish fire hazard building

Unbelievable!!!!! after being called out four or five times over the last two months the Fire Safety Dept are only now trying to find out who owns the building!!!!! If they’d done this after the first incident and instructed the ‘owner’ to use some security measures then perhaps there wouldn’t have been such a waste of public resources!!!
