Council election nominations close today

NOMINATIONS close at 12 noon today for the borough council elections in Warrington.
The three main parties are expected to contest every ward but for Burtonwood and Winwick and Hatton, Stretton and Walton where there are no local elections this year.
Labour will be bidding to overthrow the alliance between the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives which has controlled the council in recent years.
But this year it is inevitable that the contest will be overshadow by the General Election, which is to be held on the same day, Thursday, May 6.
Nominations for the General Election close on Tuesday, April 20.
Poll cards have been distributed throughout most of the borough and a full list of polling stations will be published on April 27.
Anyone who has not received a poll card should check they are registered by
contacting the electoral services team on 01925 442184.
Warrington Borough Council has 57 councillors who represent 22 electoral wards in the borough.
Each councillor serves four years and are up for election on a rota basis. Local elections are held in three out of every four years and each year one third of the 57 councillors retire.
The present political constitution of the council is: Liberal Democrats 28, Labour 22, Conservatives, seven.
