Candidates urged to stand for children

THE NSPCC has launched “I Stand for Children” – a campaign which gives everyone in Warrington the chance to make child protection a top priority for every election candidate to make sure more children are kept safe from abuse.
Helen Westerman, NSPCC local campaigns co-ordinator, said: “To ensure that vital child protection reforms are put in place, and essential funding and resources secured, we need to have every election candidate’s commitment.
“The next elected government will face difficult choices. In this time of reduced spending, frontline services to protect children could be cut back or frozen. Child protection needs to remain as high on the political agenda in order to protect and be there for more children.”
The NSPCC’s campaign is calling on candidates to commit to a range of child protection measures including a safer internet, continued funding for helplines, taking domestic violence, implementing vital child protection reforms, etc.
Diana Sutton, head of the public affairs and campaigns unit at the NSPCC, said: “We need to make sure that the next elected UK Government keeps child protection high on its list of priorities. By signing up to our campaign, candidates in this next general election can help. The public can play their role by letting the politicians know what they want done.
“People in Warrington can support the campaign online by sending a pre-prepared message to their local candidates, showing that they want them to put child protection at the top of their agenda. We’ve made it quick and easy to do and it’ll take just a minute of your time”.
