Residents' DIY park officially open

RESIDENTS who raised more than £180,000 saw their dream come to fruition when a local park was officially opened by the Mayor of Warrington Coun Brian Axcell.
They raised the money in 18 months, by fundraising events and grants, to transform the park, once plagued by vandalism and nuisance youths taking drugs and drinking.
The area known as the Boat Park – because it contained a play boat – has been improved thanks to the work of Dorchester Residents Association at Great Sankey, led by chairman Alan Izzard.
Dozens of excited children and their parents enjoyed the opening at the Dorchester Road park.
At the ceremony Mr Izzard said: “The Dorchester Residents Association hope that now the park has been finished, the local community carry on their good work, and that the community will embrace the park and call it their own for future generations to enjoy and play on.”
Coun Jim Regan said: “This is an example of what a dedicated group of residents can achieve. All the credit should go to them. This playground will be of great benefit to the children of this community who themselves had a hand in the design.”
Work carried out on the site includes new designs and equipment, removal of old damaged play equipment, untidy bushes dug up and damaged fences removed.
The association is now looking for new members.
