LABOUR politicians have condemned plans by Warrington Borough Council to cut childcare provision in the town.
Warrington North MP Helen Jones and Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Warrington South Nick
Bent have both criticised the move.
The MP said: “Hard working families deserve support, yet this council is determined to make their lives more difficult.
“The government has put millions into improving childcare. Now the council is closing crèches at Birchwood, Fordton and Woolston and is abandoning plans for children’s centres in Culcheth and Woolston.”
Mr Bent said: “The council should get its priorities right. The introduction of Sure Start and Children’s Centres is one of the most popular things that the Labour Government has done, and parents in every Warrington community depend on them.”
He condemned council “threats” to stop day-care provision at Westy Nursery and accused it of “pulling the plug” on children’s centres in Appleton and Lymm.
Both the MP and Mr Bent are supporting a new high-profile campaign “Shout Out for a Sure Start,” launched recently with support from Children’s Secretary Ed Balls.

There must be an election coming up, the intelligently challenged are going into over-drive.
I wonder which services they would suggest being stopped?
As a mother, as far as I’m concerned the council could close every Sure Start centre – they are a complete waste of money and resources. Parents in “every Warington community” do not need them – deprived areas need them to provide parenting support for parents who are unable or unwilling to parent responsibly but that’s it – Culcheth, Appleton and Lymm certainly don’t need them in my opinion.
Mustn’t get parents who are unable or unwilling to be responsible in Culcheth, Lymm and Appleton then hey Greatidea ?
