Lead thieves target churches

0

PEOPLE who live near churches in Warrington have been asked to keep a lookout for lead thieves following three thefts in as many days.
Three churches at Latchford were targeted and police believe the culprits may be using the church’s own wheelie bins to carry the lead away.
The first theft was at the Reed Construction site in Backbrook Place where a new Roman Catholic church is under construction. It was the second lead theft from the site.
The following day, raiders got away with lead from the roof of Christ Church, in Wash Lane. Slates were also removed from the roof, leaving a gaping hole immediately above the 100-year-old organ.
The third raid was at Latchford Methodist Church and also left the roof leaking.
Police have urged people living near churches to keep a watch at night as it seems the thefts are linked.
Anyone who can help with enquiries is asked to call police on 0845 458 0000 or use the confidential Crimestoppers line 0800 555 111.
