Dedicated team tackles winter damage

A DEDICATED team of craftsmen is working to help repair damage caused to properties in Warrington by the worst winter in 30 years.
Warrington Home Information and Improvement Agency (WhiA) wants to reduce the number of deaths which occur annually in the borough during the period December-March.
The winter weather can have alarming effects on health, particularly among the more vulnerable elderly population. Cold homes increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes as well as contributing to worsening arthritis, social isolation and impaired mental health.
Annually, it is estimated that 108 ‘extra’ deaths occur in Warrington during the winter months.
In an attempt to lower this figure, WHiA has dedicated additional resources during this period, offering trusted contractors to fit new boilers, install new windows and mend burst water pipes, successfully meeting the high demand from older people to carry out essential repairs.
Geraldine Kiddle, Warrington Home Improvement Agency manager, comments: “Older people are much more susceptible to the cold and the recent extreme temperatures have left some residents facing difficulties in their home.
“It is vital that their properties are kept in good repair all year round, particularly in the winter, to avoid unnecessary ill health and, in severe conditions, hospital admissions.
“We have a dedicated team at WHiA who have completed hundreds of repairs and improvements since December and will continue throughout the year, keeping local residents warm and healthy.
“I would encourage anyone to contact us for free advice on repairs and maintenance. We may also be able to offer help with paying for essential repairs for those over 60 who own their own home.”
WHiA is a non-profit advisory service for older, disabled or vulnerable people and families on low incomes who own their own homes or live in private rented accommodation and wish to repair, improve or adapt their homes. It is Warrington Borough Council’s official nominated home improvement agency and is part of Warrington Housing Association (WHA).
