Lessons in grave digging!

EXCAVATING graves safely and grave digging requirements in a pandemic were among the topics on a training session for Warrington’s Bereavement Services team.
Grounds staff from the borough council took part in the training at Preston-based Myerscough College as part of a project to develop new skills and become competent at multi-tasking.
They completed a one day Safety in the Burial Process course. It covered preparation and safe excavation of graves – including practical, compassionate and health and safety issues – grave digging requirements in pandemic situations and use of modern machinery in the burial process.
Other members of the bereavement services full-time staff completed a three-day course which enables them to go onto the NVQ Level 2 in Amenity Horticulture.
Neil Simpson, council bereavement services manager, said: “Formerly, staff at the council would have their own specific tasks but through training like this many staff can now multi-task and be of great assistance in more than one department.”
