Think carefully when online

PEOPLE are being urged to think carefully about information and photos they publish on social networking sites as Safer Internet Day is marked in Warrington.
“Think B4 U post” is the message of the day, Tuesday February 9. It aims to promote safe and responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially among children and young people who are major users of social networking sites and other new online services.
Warrington Safeguarding Children Board is developing an e-safety strategy which will be launched later this year.
A spokesperson said: “People young and old don’t always consider that the personal information they post remains online and can be accessed by anyone – including their parents, teachers and future employers. Many employers now also check their job candidates online.
“Personal information contained in social networking profiles can be used by unscrupulous individuals for criminal purposes and innocent pictures can easily be displayed in a completely different context, leading to embarrassment or even bullying.”
The message is to use the privacy settings offered by social networking services and think carefully about the potential consequences of publishing information and photos.
