Be a good neighbour say police

WARRINGTON people are being urged by police to show festive spirit and be good neighbours.
They are being encouraged to check on elderly and vulnerable neighbours over Christmas and New Year – and keep an eye on any properties that might be empty while people are late night shopping or visiting family and friends.
Officers say at this time of year there tends to be an increase in doorstep crimes – such as distraction burglaries and bogus callers – as criminals take advantage of darker nights.
Homes full of presents are an attraction for sneaky thieves – who will use any insecure doors or windows as an excuse to enter a property.
Chief Inspector Nick Bailey said: “It can be very easy to be distracted during the festive season and to forget about simple things such as making sure doors and windows are locked at home.
“We are urging all residents to be on their guard over the festive period and to review their current security measures to ensure their homes are safe and secure at all times. We are also encouraging residents to take the time to check on elderly and vulnerable neighbours and to report any suspicious activity to police.”
Officers are advising people to join a Home Watch scheme, where residents can keep an eye on properties and pass on information to the police about problems in the area. A recent meeting to promote the scheme was held at the Tim Parry Recreation Centre.
Coun Jim Regan, who attended the meeting, said: “We would urge residents to become members of their local Home Watch scheme. There are many benefits and, during this current financial climate, if you are a member of Home Watch then your house insurance may be reduced.”
Further information about Home Watch is available from PCSO Garaven on 01244 612620.
