Councillors to try speed debating

YOUNG people will have the chance to quiz the borough council when an innovative “speed debating” event is held in Warrington.
The event, part of the Local Democracy programme, is aimed at getting more people involved in politics.
It will be held at the Town Hall tomorrow (Thursday) from 6pm and is described by organisers as similar to “speed dating.”
Councillors and senior officers will remain in allocated seats while young people move from table to table putting their questions to participants in three minute slots.
Taking part will be 20 students from Priestly College and members of the IMPACT youth forum. It aims to encourage young people to engage more with politics, to put forward their own ideas and to scrutinise decisions made by elected representatives.
The Mayor Coun Brian Axcell will open the event, which will be attended by leaders of the three main political parties. Senior officers, such as the council’s solicitor and the head of sustainable transportation, members of the Executive Board and Warrington’s youth parliament members will also be there.
Coun Axcell said: “I am looking forward to this opportunity for the council to engage with young people and to hearing their views and opinions. It is essential for democracy in our town that we start to involve young people more and more in the political process.”
