Degree opportunity for police recruits

A UNIQUE new degree in Warrington will offer training to the county’s police force.
The University of Chester has formed a pioneering partnership with Cheshire Police to introduce a Foundation Degree in Policing at its Warrington campus – which will be showcased on Friday.
Generally delivered over two years the degree will provide initial training to every new officer who joins the force, incorporating and accrediting the Force’s Initial Learning and Development Programme.
It is thought to be unique as it is delivered by police on a university campus, is accredited by the university, and includes elements unlike other work-based programmes, particularly those that are conducted pre-employment.
It aims to train and develop student police officers who, on completion of the programme, are confirmed in their rank by the chief officer of police.
By completing the degree the officers receive a formal, transferable Higher Education qualification which reflects the range of academic, vocational, intellectual, and practical skills they have gained.
Guests on Friday will view officers undergoing a number of simulated training scenarios including a medical emergency, a stop and search for an offensive weapon, a breath test of a suspected drunk driver and the management of anti-social behaviour.
Robin Field-Smith, HM Inspector of Constabulary, and David Baines, Assistant Chief Constable of Cheshire Constabulary will attend.
ACC Baines said: “This approach will underpin the lifelong learning and accreditation of all our officers, and can only be to the benefit of those we serve.
“In addition, other students at the university are engaging with student officers from an early stage, and some are being given work placement opportunities within the force in specialist areas, such as forensics and media. All of this ensures our staff are accessible, visible and part of the community we serve.”
