Police launch online crime monitor

POLICE have launched a new online facility to enable people to monitor crime levels in their own area.
Visitors to the Cheshire Police website can see for themselves how many crimes or incidents of anti-social behaviour there have been in their area during the last three months.
The website is updated every month and currently shows that Warrington has a crime rate of 6.6 compared with 7.4 last year – a reduction of 9.9 per cent.
Crime rates are calculated on the basis of crimes per 1,000 population.
It is also possible to see the levels of various different types of crime.
In Warrington, burglary for instance, is currently running at 0.4, which is in line with the average for the rest of Cheshire.
Robbery is 0.1, a 26.7 per cent reduction on the same period last year and again in line with the Cheshire average. Vehicle crime is 1.3, which is down 12.4 per cent but still average for the county.
Violence, at 0.9 is down nine per cent and anti social behaviour, at 4.8, is down by 1.6 per cent. Both are average for the county.
The website gives detailed figures for every part of the borough – as well as for other parts of Cheshire.
Users can search by area or town names or by postcode to find their local crime figures
There are comments from local police officers, explaining local trends and visitors to the site can also find out more about policing in their neighbourhood, including contact details for their local neighbourhood policing unit (NPU) and what its current priorities are.
Visitors to the site, which uses detailed Ordnance Survey maps, can view crime rates over the last 12 months and actual crime numbers and rates for the last three months. Comparisons can also be made with the previous years’ figures.
A police spokesman said: “The launch of the crime mapping facility is the first stage of providing very localised information for our communities and future planned development of the site will include providing information to members of the public to allow them to make informed choices and influence policing priorities in their area. Users can subscribe to an RSS feed which will let them know when new information is published on the site.”
The system is available on the Cheshire Constabulary website www.cheshire.police.uk
