PLANS for a new canal-side community of nearly 500 homes, shops, light industry and health facilities, have been given the final go-ahead by Warrington planning chiefs.
The development will be on land adjoining Latchford Locks and Richmond Recreation Club – and will include a refurbishment of the club and its bowling green.
Objections were received from Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council, on the opposite side of the Manchester Ship Canal.
They supported local residents who feared noise, disturbance, extra traffic and an overbearing outlook. They claimed that new homes would be intrusive, unsightly and incongruous because of their height.
There were also calls for additional landscaping on both sides of the locks.
The development – which received outline planning consent some time ago – will have 148 apartments, 215 mews houses and 123 detached houses, of two and three storeys. The apartments will be of four and five storeys The retail, employment and light industrial units will be single storey.
In addition to refurbishing the Richmond Club and bowling green, the developer will make a donation of £93,605 to Warrington Primary Care Trust towards the cost of health care provision.
A new roundabout will be constructed to combat any traffic problems caused by the development and a children’s play area will be provided within the site.
