Young people told:
“Stub it out”

by John Hendon

UNDER age sales of tobacco is just one of the issues being tackled in Warrington in a join initiative between the borough council’s trading standards department and the Primary Care Trust.
In the United Kingdom about 450 children start smoking every day and more than 80 per cent of smokers take up the habit as teenagers.
In Warrington, the campaign is addressing some of the issues relating to tobacco and smoking to help young people and adults kick the habit.
Trading Standards has recently secured funding for a Tobacco Control Project Officer to help tackle issues and a key focus will be under age sales of tobacco and reducing the numbers of young people who start smoking. Trading Standards will seek to work with traders to improve compliance and assist them to address the issues around young people buying tobacco.
Actions such as this designed to prevent access to tobacco by young people have been proven to reduce the numbers starting to smoke and make it difficult for young smokers to continue.
Trading Standards will also work with the PCT’s Stop Smoking Service, which supports both adults and young people who wish to stop smoking with a drop-in centre for young people at Connexions at the Gateway, Sankey Street, Warrington on Tuesday afternoons and a telephone help line on 01925 843713.
Coun Maureen Banner, the borough council’s executive member for Wellbeing, said: “This joint initiative between the council and the PCT will tackle a range of issues around tobacco, in addition to under age sales and support for young people who wish to stop smoking the emerging issue of counterfeit cigarettes that pose added health risk to smokers will be an area of this work”.

Two charged with burglary –
thanks to residents’ action

by John Hendon

VIGILANT residents of the Culcheth and Croft areas of Warrington have been praised by police, following the arrest of two men.
The pair, from the Manchester area, have been charged with burglary as a result of prompt action from residents.
But police are still concerned about the unusually high number of burglaries and thefts in the area, predominantly involving opportunist thieves entering properties and buildings left insecure.
A police spokesman said: ?In particular , downstairs windows need to be secured at night, especially at this time of year with the run up to Christmas. We would ask residents remain alert and vigilant.?
Police are requesting that garden sheds are also secured properly. Over the past few weeks there have been a number of house burglaries in the area, including garden sheds being broken into.
