Wolves left to lick wounds!

WARRINGTON Wolves were left licking their wounds after a bruising opening defeat 28-18 to Huddersfield Giants at the Millennium Magic weekend in Cardiff.
The Wolves took an early 6-0 lead but were knocked off their stride by a determined Giants outfit.
Coach Tony Smith (pictured right) admitted the best team won but of greater concern will be the health of his squad, with Australian Matt King the biggest casualty.
The former Kangaroos international was carried off on a stretcher with suspected knee-ligament damage, while Lee Briers later left the action after suffering a nasty-looking bang on the head.
“We’re not in great shape,” Smith admitted.
“We’ll wait until we get the seriousness of King’s injury. Lee Briers is also going to hospital for x-rays on his neck but hopefully it’s precautionary.”
Warrington also lost Mike Cooper (shoulder), Simon Grix (dead leg) and Chris Bridge (hamstring) during a bruising clash with the Giants.
Smith, who was left with no substitutes in the closing stages, admitted afterwards that Huddersfield had been the better side on the day.
“Our opponents deserved to win,” he said. “They played a bit better than us. We were far from our best. It was very frustrating. We need to improve and we will.
“I’ve got to say there were some courageous boys out there and to fight back at the back end of the game with no subs showed what we’re about as a club.”
New recruit Joel Monaghan marked his debut with a try inside five minutes, though the Australian’s effort was a rare highlight for the Wolves.
The Giants ran in a total of five tries in Cardiff, the pick of them being a stunning brace scored by Danny Brough.
Wolves debutant Joel Monaghan, meanwhile, got his new career off to a fine start with an early try but that was as good as Warrington’s afternoon got.
Ben Westwood and Ryan Atkins also scored for Warrington but they also found themselves losing possession and missing tackles during the match.
