Mathers brace inspires Wolves

TWO first-half tries from full-back Richie Mathers helped Warrington Wolves to a 40-6 victory over Catalan Dragons at the Halliwell Jones this afternoon.
Warrington bounced back from the loss of young forward Ben Harrison in the opening minute as Mathers went over for two tries with the other first half scores coming from Lee Briers, Richie Myler and Chris Riley just before the break, after returning from a sin binning following a mass brawl involving numerous players including Catalans Philippe Baile, who was also yellow carded.
With Ben Westwood converting four out of five conversions the Wolves were in total control leading 28-0 at the break.
Warrington extended their lead on 49 minutes when Michael Cooper went over to make it 34-0.
The French eventually breached Warrington’s defence on 61 minutes through Ferriol with the conversion added by Mounis to make it 34-6.
But it was the Wolves who had the final say when Micky Higham scooted over five minutes from time with Westwood adding the extras to complete the scoring at 40-6.
After the game Warrington coach Tony Smith said: “The boys wanted to keep a clean sheet. Richie Mathers is upset about tapping the ball back.
“But his positives outweighed his negatives and he did really well. He shouldn’t beat himself about too much.
“It was a very good first half. We were great with the ball and also defensively even when they looked like troubling us.”
