Little festive cheer for Town

1

THERE was little Christmas cheer for Warrington’s travelling barmy army of Santas as Town crashed 4-1 at high flying Lancaster.
Warrington were looking to continue their good recent away league form, and handed a debut to recent signing Levi Kennedy, who has joined the club from league rivals Woodley Sports.
But it took just seven minutes for the home team to take the lead when midfielder Christopher Ward dispatched a penalty after Mike Grogan fouled winger Cyril Sharrock. The home side went further ahead in the 15th minute, when striker Jordan Connerton was allowed to slot home at the third attempt after his two previous efforts were blocked by the Town defence. The home side were rampant and went further ahead in the 21st minute, Sharrock was allowed to turn in the box and dispatch a shot beyond Jack Baker in Town’s goal. Unbelievably, within two minutes, the home side went further ahead, Connerton being on hand to shoot home, after Baker saved striker Adam Farrell’s initial shot. The home side continued to control the game and were denied a fifth goal by an excellent save by Baker.
Town eventually started to get back in the game and Karl Connelly saw his diving header well saved by Martin Fearon in the Lancaster goal while Tony Evans saw his weak shot easily dealt with by Fearon. Town’s last chance of the half fell to Connelly, a back header going narrowly wide of the target.
After a number of substitutions early in the second half, Town got more into the game, Jimmy McCarthy poked his shot wide, after a good build up. Town did pull a goal back in the 55th minute, top scorer Chris Gahgan beating the home sides offside trap to slot home beyond Fearon, and give some cheer to the large travelling support, sparking off a conga around the ground by the travelling army of Santas!
Evans again went close soon after, heading a cross from substitute Lee Smith over the bar. The home side continued to go forward and were denied by an excellent block from skipper Mike Tomlinson. Baker was called into action twice before the end to deny the home side a fifth goal.
