AMATEUR radio enthusiast David Given has won planning permission for a 9.5m radio antenna in the rear garden of his home in Littlecote Gardens, Appleton.
Parish councillors had objected on the grounds of visual impact, unneighbourly development, proximity of ancient woodland at the rear, and effect on television reception.
Letters of objection on similar grounds were also received from a neighbour but there were letters of support from the Radio Society of Great Britain and Warrington Amateur Radio Club.
But planning officers said there would be no impact on trees, nor television reception and recommended approval.

Back when I was a radio ham, I once erected a portable antenna in the garden just to see if it was possible to do single-handedly. I left the it up overnight but the following day a group of residents came round all complaining of severe TV interference since the antenna went up. I told them I’d turn my equipment off and check back with them to see if the problem goes away.
Every one of them agreed that the problem had immediately gone away and their reception was now absolutely perfect, which was extremely odd, as actually, I had no radio equipment at my home and what’s more, the antenna didn’t even have a cable on it!
People, who needs them!

I am not sure if it should be looked upon as a 'victory' - more of an approval along the lines of Silver Surfer's comments above. It would appear that the planner and the Development Control Committee (who both made site visits) based their decision on the facts as presented to them.

There are often two fundamental reasons for neighbour objections:-
1: They fear a reduction in the value of their homes
2: " PENIS ENVY " because the amateur has a larger aerial than themselves!!.

I hope you have many hours of quiet enjoyment with your new antenna, Bill. Here in France we can put up antennas up to 12m high with no prior planning application. There should be something similar in the UK. I'll listen out for you - what frequency/time?
