Anti-bridge toll campaigners get a boost

THE cross-party campaign to scrap the road tolls on the Mersey bridges at Runcorn for Warrington drivers has received another boost with two parish councils voting unanimously to back the campaign.
Both Penketh and Great Sankey parish councils passed resolutions condemning the tolls and calling for them to be scrapped completely.
Together, Penketh and Great Sankey parish councils represent over 30,000 residents on the west side of Warrington, close to the Mersey bridges.
And in another positive development for the campaign, more than 500 local residents have now signed an online petition calling on the Government to do a u-turn and scrap the tolls for Warrington drivers.
The online petition was launched by Nick Bent, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Warrington South.
Organisations backing the campaign include more than 250 local businesses, led by the Chamber of Commerce, the University of Chester and Warrington and Halton NHS Trust.
The new road tolls would be imposed on all Warrington drivers using the current Silver Jubilee Bridge and new Mersey Gateway Crossing. It would cost £2 each way, and the so-called “discount pass” for Warrington drivers would be £90 per month – more than £1,000 per year.
Road tolls at Runcorn would also mean even worse congestion in Warrington – a nightmare for residents, for business and for the town’s reputation.
