A WARRINGTON woman who falsely claimed £80,274 in benefit has been handed a suspended prison sentence – and ordered to repay the money.
Roslyn Cade, aged 43, of Padgate Lane, Warrington pleaded guilty to two offences of benefit fraud at the town’s magistrates court.
The court was told the woman was claiming benefits but failed to inform the borough council and Department of Work and Pensions that she was living with a partner and he was in full time employment.
Cade falsely claimed £34,837 housing benefit and £10,368 council tax benefit and council tax support from the council and £35,067 income support and employment support allowance from the DWP.
She was given an eight month jail sentence, suspended for one year, a one year supervision order with 200 hours unpaid work and a curfew order was imposed for eight months between the hours of 8pm and 6am.
She was ordered to repay the overpayments in full.
After the hearing, Adrian Webster, the borough council’s benefits and exchequer services manager, said: “Every day in the UK over 200 benefit thieves are caught and the clear message is – if you commit benefit fraud you will be caught.”
