BEDROOM tax continues to hit people in the town, according to Warrington North MP Helen Jones.
More than 1300 people in Warrington are paying the bedroom tax, while more than 3100 people are on the waiting list for social housing, including almost 1500 looking for one bedroom properties.
The MP said: “The hardest hit are disabled people and carers.
“There are not enough one bedroom homes for people to move into now and yet many more people will be hit if, for example, a family member dies or moves away.
“It is simply not possible for all these people to find the one bedroom properties they are seeking. Even the government’s own studies show that people are having to cut back on household essentials to pay the tax.
“This is an unjust tax which hits those least able to pay. We need a Labour government to abolish it once and for all.”
Bedroom tax, or under-occupancy charge, was introduced in April 2013, and restricts the amount of housing benefit that council and housing association tenants can claim if they are deemed to have “spare” bedrooms.
