HGV ban for busy country lane

markscherrylane (1)HIGHWAYS chiefs are moving forward with proposals for an HGV ban on the full length of Cherry Lane, Lymm.
Cost of the ban and traffic calming which has already been installed is £57,000.
But many residents are unhappy with the nature and location of the traffic cushions installed on Cherry Lane and Elm Tree Road, according to Cllr Ian Marks.
“They feel the money could be better spent on repairing potholes and pavement repairs,” he said.
Twelve cushions are now in place on Elm Tree Road and at the bottom of Cherry Lane to help enforce a 20 mph zone. The measures were put in place following extensive consultation with residents.
Cllr Marks said: “I am totally in favour of traffic calming on Cherry Lane but we are worried the wrong problem has been dealt with.
“Cars speed off the motorway and many would like a 40mph limit at the top but this has been ruled out by the borough council. There is a safety hazard for pedestrians at the right angled bend at the start of Elm Tree Road. Too many drivers still abuse the one-way system by the Co-op.
“We do not have a speeding problem where all the speed cushions are. One resident told me the bumps by the Co-op are just plain stupid as you would have trouble getting to 20 mph on that stretch of road.
“The original proposal had 10 cushions on the village side of Booths Lane. This was silly and at least the council listened to local people and councillors and installed two more on the south side where they are more beneficial.”
