Six-storey college gets go-ahead

PLANNING bosses have given the go-ahead for the futuristic six-storey building which will house Warrington’s University Technical College.
It will be built on a cleared site to the south of Tanners Lane and east of Dallam Lane and forms part of the borough council’s proposed “Stadium Quarter” near to Warrington Wolves’ stadium off Winwick Road.
It will offer engineering and energy education and training for 620 young people in the 14-19 age range and will incorporate a range of workshops and laboratories,
Planning officers say although the design of the building is simple it will have a hi-tech and striking visual impression.
The University Technical College building will adjoin a business start-up “incubator building” which was granted planning consent earlier in the year.
Previously occupied by the Dallam Day Centre, the site is bounded by the Bewsey Street Conservation Area to the west and the Winwick Street Conservation Area to the east.
It is within easy walking distance of Warrington town centre, close to bus stops and Warrington Central railway station.
Planners believe the building will give further momentum for further proposals and give confidence to the promoters of other development proposals on the remainder of the site.
