WARRINGTON has fewer midwives today than it had four years ago, according to MP Helen Jones.
Figures obtained by the Warrington North MP in the House of Commons show Warrington and Halton Hospital NHS Trust now has 102 midwives, compared with 105 in 
2010 – despite promise from the Prime Minister that there would be more.
She said: “The number of midwives employed here has fallen each year under this government. In 2011 there were 100, in 2012 there were 98 and in 2013 there were 94. Even this year we have not reached the level of 2010.
“This puts additional stress on the midwives we do have and makes their job of giving the best care to mothers and babies more difficult.
“This government has even denied them the one per cent pay rise they were awarded by an independent body, leading midwives to strike for the first time in their history.
“All women know the importance of consistent individual care during pregnancy and childbirth. Midwives do their best to provide this but they need sufficient staff to be able to care properly.
“ At the moment the government is neglecting the needs of Warrington mothers and babies. “
