Serial domestic abuse offenders targeted

SERIAL domestic abuse offenders in Warrington are being targeted by police in a new initiative.
Operation Relentless is currently in its pilot phase and will see perpetrators of domestic abuse, who have offended repeatedly against multiple intimate partners, face an enhanced level of police intervention with a view to preventing domestic abuse.
The operation will work with key partners, all of who are focused on reducing re-offending throughout Warrington.
This will allow police to work together with others to ensure that offenders who present the greatest risk and those who repeatedly offend are managed in a co-ordinated way.
Detective Constable David Thomason said: “Domestic abuse is a crime for which there is never an excuse. This approach to dealing with cases allows us to reduce re-offending and protect victims and communities.”
“Those offenders who choose not to engage with the operation open themselves up to being robustly and proactively targeted by the police. This means very close supervision and several planned, and unplanned, visits a week and poor engagement is dealt with as a priority.”
The operation will also form part of a wider risk management plan when a person is made the subject of a Domestic Violence Protection Order (DVPO).
DVPOs are a new power that fills a gap in providing protection to victims by enabling the police and magistrates to put in place protection in the immediate aftermath of a domestic violence incident.
With DVPOs, a perpetrator can be banned with immediate effect from returning to a residence and from having contact with the victim for up to 28 days, allowing the victim time to consider their options and get the support they need.
Operation Relentless will manage the robust enforcement of DVPOs through co-ordinating the police response and seeking to engage the offender in an appropriate plan to prevent domestic abuse.
It will complement existing meetings which regularly take place between different agencies to discuss issues surrounding domestic abuse.
