Step forward – to keep yourself safe

PEOPLE in Warrington are being urged to step forward and give some of their time to help make their community stay safe.
Cheshire Police and Crime commissioner John Dwyer (pictured) wants to recruit volunteer community safety advocates as part of his drive to encourage people to participate in policing.
He said: “I am asking people to volunteer as ‘community safety advocates’ and give victims of crime advice about how they can stay safe. In practical terms, this would mean working with the support of the Constabulary’s crime reduction advisors in delivering community safety messages.
“This might mean giving advice about keeping windows and doors locked, how to keep gardens and sheds secure and how to avoid being the victim of a pickpocket or opportunist thief.
“We are looking for people who want to become an important part of the wider police family, but who may feel that becoming a Special Constable is too big an ask for them. People who want to give something back to their community and who, like me, share a desire to reduce the number of victims of crime.”
Community safety advocates will attend public events to give safety advice and talk to victims of crime and anti-social behaviour in their homes about how to avoid becoming a victim again in the future.
Mr Dwyer added, “This is a fantastic opportunity as the advocates will receive training and information which will be useful to them in other aspects of their daily lives. I urge people to consider the role and step forwards.”
