Grass fires warning as heat rises

FIREFIGHTERS in Warrington are warning people about the dangers of grass fires.
A combination of warmer weather and school holidays often lead to an increase in this type of fire which can be extremely dangerous and spread quickly.
Crews have already dealt with a large grass fire on Grasmere Avenue and with the sunshine set to continue for the time being the service is reminding people to take extra care when out and about.
Warrington station manager Paul Jackson said: “It is really important for people to be aware of the risks when it comes to grass fires as the dry
weather can make conditions extremely dangerous. They can quickly get out of hand, cause extensive damage, and put lives at risk.
“Once a fire takes hold it can also last for several days, using up valuable Fire Service resources which could be needed elsewhere.
“Although there are a number of reasons why grass fires start, one of them is as a result of people starting them deliberately and I would urge parents to help us try and prevent this by talking to their children about the dangers.”
Fire chiefs urge people to dispose of smoking materials safely, make sure camp fires or barbecues are extinguished, clear away bottles or broken glass and explain to children the dangers of playing with fire.
But people should not attempt to put out fires themselves and should call the fire service.
Anyone starting fires deliberately should be reported to Crimestoppers on 0845 555 111 or by calling Cheshire Police on 101.
