Young people want town centre cinema

A CINEMA in the centre of town and more anti-smoking marketing materials were just some of the ideas young people put forward at Warrington’s first “Youth Challenge” event.
Young people aged 13-19 were invited to the Youth Café, the Skills Bank and the Careers Centre where they were given the chance to challenge and question key decision makers about what they had done to achieve the priorities set out in Warrington’s Integrated Youth Strategy.
More than 80 young people attended and challenged professionals from 11 different organisations. They raised issues including:
•Bus fares and limited evening services
•Providing a cinema in the centre of town
•Producing anti-smoking marketing materials that target young people
•Getting specialists to deliver sexual health education in schools.
Cllr Jean Carter, the council’s lead member for children and young people’s services, said: “Feedback from young people and professionals who attended was really positive. Young people were pleased to have the chance to make their voice heard and to find out about services, and professionals valued receiving direct feedback from their service users. A comment written on the graffiti wall in the Youth Café said ‘It was amazing, really enjoyed it!’
“The challenge now is to make sure that the council and its partner agencies respond to what we have been told and amend the Integrated Youth Strategy to make sure that it meets the needs of young people across the borough.”
